HAMAKHIS

Deity/Philosophy

Nature & purpose

  • Hamakhis is the Lord of the Dead and the Final Judge. Before the Uttermost War, he studied death in all its aspects. Hamakhis was also one of Ptah's judges and was charged with the judgement of those who violated the First Coveant.

During the Uttermost War, the Demons ravaged Xanadu the city of Ptah. Hamakhis was one of the few survivors of Xanadu. He collected a few of the other surviving Lords and told them.

  • In my years I have learned many things from those I judged. I had one person who was tried on the charge of abomination. He was attempting to animate the dead. In his final plea he broke down and told me about the secret of unlife. I intend to seek this unlife and use it against the foul Demons.
  • Many of the lords who were present balked at undergoing such a horrendous quest. Only seven lords remained and they pledged to go with Hamakhis and seek the unlife.

Many years passed and the battles of the Uttermost War raged on. Then at the ruins of Xanadu, the lord Thulas beheld a terrifying sight.

  • I heard the thundering of hooves coming near, so quickly hid behind a rocky outcropping. I saw seven black horses come to the ruins of the Hall of Judgment. On those seven horses were seven beings, each dressed in a black robe with a black hood. The faces in the black hood were as black a night and no features could be see. The seven horses stopped and formed a circle around the ruined Hall there they drew seven silver swords and raised the swords in the air. With a shout they yelled "Hamakhis!", with that I felt a low rumble on the ground and saw the lord Hamakhis ride into the circle. He rode on a horse with no flesh and the horse was the color of bone. He was wearing a robe the color of bone. When he drew back his hood his face had no flesh on it. With a shout he lifted his hand and brought up a single black sphere. He said "Behold Bukrai the Undeath. For tonight we ride and all demons may tremble.". Then, with Hamakhis in the lead, the horses leaped into the air and rode south to the battles.
  • Hamakhis and legion of undead, aided the cause of the Lords against the demons aiding in battle after battle. Finally after the Final Victory at Tiranog, Hamakhis was one of the nine surviving lords with Ptah. When the final judgement of the Demons was pronouced, Hamakhis placed the Crystal of the Ivory Flame as one of the nine crystals imprisioning the demons on Tiranog.

Ptah, with the other nine lords made the Second Coveant freeing the childern races and giving them their own destiny. With the lords being able to instruct them in restricted ways. Under the Second Covenant Hamakhis was made supmere judge of the dead souls to determine to which lords their souls shall reside with.

But Bukrai had many hooks into Hamakhis and he was forced to consume those souls who followed him to feed Bukrai's hunger. Soon Hamakhis began to instruct his followers to slay all those who violate the law, in order to feed him more souls. But even that couldn't make him satite Bukrai's hunger so Hamakhis started to instruct his followers to start the sacrifice.

Also they can be resurrected seven times. After the seventh time they lose their free will and become Gulmorvin. Amorvin have trouble healing and often excude a bad odor of decay.

Those involuntarily taken by the shadow by a shadow attack or spell, can be saved and restored back to his or orginall condition. However if one willingly submits to the shadow then that person is lost and will become a Amorvin.

  • Status/Relation to Culture

    Social standing

  • In many cultures of the Majestic Wilderlands , the Church of Hamakhis is banned and his followers are put to the death. Thus they have to work secretly and in out of the way places. However in one culture of the Majestic Wilderlands Hamakhis has become the dominent religion of the Sarnic peoples. The Sarnic peoples primarily inhabit the southern portion of the Pennisula and the Isle of the Blest.

In the City-State the Overlord granted the right for a heritic temple of Pegana to be built for Hamakhis.

  • Relationship with state

  • In the Sarnic lands the church is the state with the Partiarchs of each city-state being in total control. However the Order of Pegana exist to act as a check on the excesses of the Patriarchs.

The Temple of Pegana in the City-State is totally subserviant to the Overlord. The temple has gained for it a reputation for being uncorruptable and a producer of many fine legalist. The Overlord has started to appoint many of his judges from the ranks of the Temple.

  • Relationships with other prominent religions

  • All other religions depise the Church of Hamakhis save for the churches of Kali, and Ptah.
  • History of Development

    Origin of the religion

  • As one of the Ten surviving lords, Hamakhis was permitted to teach his followers under the Second Covenant as were the other lords. However his desire and need for souls caused the other gods to turn against him and drive his followers from their lands. Soon Hamakhis followers were few and far between and Hamakhis started to starve. He made agreements with Kali for a seventh part in exhange for her use of some Gulmorvin, but that still didn't satify Bukrai.

So Hamakhis looked out into world and found in east the lands of the Sarnic. At that time the Sarnic were a war-like people continually fighting among themselves. They originally followed Set but the constant warring reduce their number and they were in danger of being permently conquered.

Hamakhis began to send them his remaining followers and teaching them the ways of law and order. Also he taught them to sacrifice a seventh part of those they conquered to bring glory to Hamakhis. But the other races surrounding the Sarnic formed a great allinance against them and where determined to totally destroy the Sarnic from the face of the earth. Hamakhis secretly lead the Sarnic west from their lands to seek a new home in the west. When the Sarnic's enemies can they only found abandoned towns, and empty fields.

Hamakhis brought the them to Orchia at the end of the Padizan Pennisula. There he bade them to settle there and he raised for them the Isle of the Blest off the shores of Orchia to be the center of his worship.

  • A New Land

  • Over the next two thousand years the Sarnic prospered and expanded. But then they met their greatest enemies ; the Ghinorian Empire, the holy empire of Mitra. For many years they fought but their efforts where for naught. The Ghinorians came to the Isle of the Blest and conquereed it. The Standards of the Lion and the White Hand rose over the lands of Hamakhis.

The Patriarchs of each city of the Sarnic were killed, their temples ravaged and treasure taken to the Emperor in far away Ghinor. Thousands of the people of Sarnic were put to the torch as the holy Church of Mitra was determined to destroy the Church. But soon the attentions of the empire started to focus elsewhere. The inquisitions came fewer and fewer. While the Ghinorian Governors never permitted open worship; the followers of Hamakhis slowly recoved.

However Hamakhis knew that he would never be able to recover his people from the Lion's claws unless he could give something more than the Lion could. So in the depths and darkness of the Ghinorian oppcupation he nutured several prophets to spread the word that Hamakhis will offer everlasting life in the state of undeath.

  • Holy war and Empire

  • The words of the prophets spread thourghout the Sarnic people. The remaining lords that were still Sarnic started to make plans for the rebellion.. Then the opportunity arose in a civil war of the Ghinorian Empire, 90% of the troops were withdrawn from the Isle of the Blest and Orchia. The lords struck in the name of Hamakhis and the Sarnic people were free.

The greatest of the Sarnic Lords, Vecna of Rallu, journied to the Hall of Judgement in a great quest. There from the hands of Hamakhis himself he recieved the Cworn of all Sarnia and the right to rule in Hamakhis's name. The Sarnic Empire spread Hamakhis's word far and wide and the name of Hamakhis became feared in all the lands surrounding Sarnia.

But the Ghinorian Empire recovered and struck back, after a war of one hundred years the two empires drew back in a truce, that soon became permenent. On a evil and fell day more fanatical followers of Hamakhis who wanted to return to the old ways before the Ghinorians, killed Vecna for the seventh and last time. The lords could not agreed among themselves who was to be emperor, no one wanted Kas the greatest of Vecna's generals. Kas struck attempting to kill all the lords and become emperor. But the lords escaped and soon civil war brought down the Sarnic empire.

  • Rebirth and Gworth beyond Sarnia

  • For hundreds of years the lords of Sarnia fought over the remenents of the empire, weakening themselves and ravaging the lands in the process. Finally a thousand years after Vecna was cworned Emperor, Hamakhis ordained Pegana as his prophet. Pegana traveled thru out Sarnia critizing those lords who had fallen from the worship of Hamakhis. Pegana gained a reputation of honesty, and fairness in his judgements. Finally fed up with Pegana's preaching the lords and patriarchs conspired to give the seven deaths to Pegana. Finally Pegana gave them the pretext when he exchanged his black robes for white robes, to seize him. When question about the white robe, Pegana replied
  • I follow Hamakhis himself, not the words of men. Hamakhis has rendered his judgement on his own church and found it lacking. I given the power of pronoucing the doom of the church, and so that all men may know that it is Hamakhis speaking I wear the white, and not the back.
  • Laughing one the lords asked "What is Hamakhis's doom". Pegena replied

  • That a seventh part of the church shall die, that a seventh part of the lords shall die, that a seventh part of the people of Sarnia shall die.
  • Angered the lords and patriarchs seized Pegana and adminstered to him the "Seven Deaths".

As the last part of the ritual they untied Pegana to let his body fall to the ground to show the death was final, but Pegana did not fall and walked forth. Quaking in fear the lords and patriarchs fell back. Pegana said

  • Know ye as final proof of the Deathlord's word that I have been granted seven times seven lives as sign of his grace. By your action you have brought the doom on all of Sarnia.
  • With those words the Seven Horsemen appeared behind Pegana and killed every lord and patriarch in the room and then proceeded to kill a seventh part of all of Sarnia. After the Great Death Pegana estabilshed his Order, bade them to wear the white robes, and to keep their judgement to the words of Hamakhis and disappeared. Legend has it that he was last seen riding along the shores of the Lake of Silver on a pale horse.

Under the guidance of the Order of Pegana the lands of Sarnia and the Church experienced a new rebirth and prosperity that continues today.

  • Order of Pegana

  • The Order of Pegana is charged with keeping the purity of the Church. The Order's members are only worshippers of Hamakhis allowed to wear the white robes. They are allowed to judge any case and anybody in Sarnia. If they find a the church of one of the cities to be corrupt, they come and judge that church. If found guilty the Order of Pegana orders a seventh part of that church to give themselves up to Hamakhis. This is usally obeyed by the offending church.
  • Symbols

    Appearance and dress

  • Regular Priests of Hamakhis wear a simple black hooded robe tied with a white cord around the waist. For each ritual they perform they have a different cloak. Each cloak is basically white, with a black circle and a white skull on the back. The cloak is trimmed differently for each ritual. Rank in the church is symbolized on the trim of the sleeves

The Order of Pegana wear a white robed tied with a black cord around the waist. They wear no other ornaments or dress. Elders in the Order wear a silver cord around the waist instead of a black cord.

  • Churches and temples

  • The focus of any temple of Hamakhis is the alter. There the sacrifices are made and the rituals are held. The entire temple is built around the alter.

Temples of the Pegana are built simply and with no alter. They are built usally around a courtyard where the Elders and acolytes can study and meditate.

  • Sacred Items

  • The holy symbol for the Church of Hamakhis is the silver skull. The only other sacred item the temple preserves is the sacrifical knife which usally made of enchanted silver.
  • Dogma/Scriptures/Laws

  • The basic tenet of the church of Hamakhis is;
  • Bring glory and sacrifice to Hamakhis in this life and he will grant you powers and rewards in this life and the next.
  • The entire church revoles around the sacrifice. It is realized that without Hamakhis controlling the Shadow of Bukrai. The shadow will consume the entire world, but the only way Hamakhis can control Bukrai is thru feeding it souls and so Hamakhis formed his church on the Wilderlands to aid him in gathering souls to control the Shadow. When a worshipper aids Hamakhis particulary well then Hamakhis will grant a portion of the Shadow to make the worshipper immortal. Of course after the seventh death the worshipper will go to serve Hamakhis personnally as a Gulmorvin.

The Order of Pegana while not praticing sacrifices serves Hamakhis by ensuring that the church doesn't get carried way and destroys the land that the sacrifices come from.

  • Common Rituals

  • There are seven rituals in the Church of Hamakhis: Acceptance, Calling, Death, Life, Joining, Sacrifice, and the Seven Deaths
  • Acceptance

  • On a follower of Hamakhis 15th birthday, he or she is brought in a black robe in front of the alter. The priest then take the silver sacrifical dagger and places it over the victim heart. The priest then intones:
  • Do you, on the threshold of adulthood, accept the burden of Hamakhis, to aid him in all his endeavours, and to be ready to be fed to the Shadow, for him and all of creation.
  • If the follower saids yes, then the priest faces the alter and asks for Hamakhis blessing that the follower prosper and be fruitful. On the instances the followers say no then the priest plunges the dagger into the person's heart and offers the body as a sacrifice.

  • Calling

  • When a follower of Hamakhis is called by him to follow, the follower will head to the nearest temple and ask the high priest to serve Hamakhis and his church. The person will then admitted as a acolyte for seven years, being taught the basic tenets of Hamakhis and the workings of the church.

At the end of the seventh year the acolyte is then brought before the alter and his left there alone for seven days. The temple is closed and no one is allowed to enter or to leave. No food or water is given on those seven days.

At the end of seven days the high priest will walk into the temple. If the acolyte was accepted then the newly made priest will be standing with a freshly made black robe. The high priest will then come up and place the white cord around the priest's waist and assign the priest his or her duties.

If the acolyte is not accepted then the acolyte is found by the high priest lying on the altar with the silver dagger plunged into his or her heart.

Usally temples keep a separate altar for the calling.

  • Life

  • On the seventh month of the child's life the parents brings the child to the temple of Hamakhis. The father then takes the child up to the alter where the high priest lays the silver sacrifical dagger on the child's chest and intones:
  • On this child's breast I lay the burden of Hamakhis, may the child grow to accept this burden and to bring glory to Hamakhis's name.
  • With that the father takes the dagger and intones:

  • Until the child can accept for him/herself, I will gladly take the burden instead.
  • The father hands the dagger back to the priest and then the temple scribe records the child's name and parents.

  • Joining

  • The couple walks into the temple on a carpet of flowers thrown by well-wishers. Once in temple, they apporach the altar only in the presence of the priest and the temple scribe. There the priest chants:
  • O Hamakhis, hear the words of the two about to join. Give them some of thy glory so they may grow and prosper.
  • The couple then chant:

  • O Hamakhis, we pledge our joining to you to bring glory to you and creation. We pledge to grow and prosper in your name, and together we may share more of the burden then apart.
  • With that the priest then hand them each a single silver token of Hamakhis apiece, the temple scribe records their joining and then the couple leave the temple to join the joining feast.

  • Sacrifice

  • The ritual of sacrifice is the most important ritual in the church of Hamakhis. In this ritual the people and church directly aid Hamakhis in his burden of controlling the Shadow.

The sacrifice either willing or non-willing. A follower who is old, dishonored, or feels the call will offer him or herself to the temple for sacrifice. The high priest will give the follower the seven days of pleasure, giving them all manner of food, drink, and entertainment. Then proceed with the sacrifice.

Unwilling sacrifice are usally criminals or captured in war. They are too treated with good food and drink, but usally held under strict guard.

    When the ritual is ready to began; the sacrifices are lined up and the high priest intones;

  • O Sacrifices, prepare! For you will be given up to Hamakhis for his glory and the salvation of creation. For he and he alone, holds back the Shadow that threatens us all.
  • Then each sacrifice is brought up to the altar and is tied down with cords of silver. The high priest raise his dagger and chants:

  • O Hamakhis, accept our meager sacrifice, may this ease your burden!
  • Then the priest plunges the dagger into the sacrifice's heart instantly killing the sacrifice. The body is then taken to the furnace and burned.

  • Seven Deaths

  • Often when a follower commits heresy or a person severely threatens the church's work. The priest will sieze the person and perform the "Seven Deaths". The Seven Death is so that Hamakhis is ensured that he recieves the soul of the person regardless of whether the person follows him or not.

The ritual start with the person being tied to a cross, (the cross representing the sacrifical dagger). However the person still has his or her feet touching the ground so will not be able to die of sufforcation. Then a hourglass is placed on a silver stand next to the person. Then seven priest each will silver dagger form a semi-circle. On each turn of the hourglass one of the priests steps up to the person and adminsters one of the "cuts of death". This continues until all seven priests have gone.

After the last cut by the seventh priest, the hour glass is overturned again and the priests wait. When the sands run out, the first and seventh priest untie the person from the cross. The body is allowed to sump to the floor and then the fourth priest intones:

  • And so it is done.
  • The seven priests then carry the body out and burn it, scattering the ashes over the altar.

  • Undeath

  • At times Hamakhis will call certain followers to share his burden. Hamakhis in turns grants them imortallity and seven lives before they must join him. The follower will feel the call of Hamakhis and head for the nearest temple. Once entering the temple the follower will approach the alter. Once at the alter Mryvia will be appear on top of the altar. There she will say:
  • Hamakhis calls thee, to grant thy heart's desire. But the Lords of Bones asks what sacrifice will he be given for this boon.
  • The follower then usally replies;

  • To thy form, I gift my soul
  • Then Thantos appears and takes the followers to the throne of Hamakhis. There in front of Klyss and Hamakhis the follower swears the seven holy oaths and is granted undeath by Hamakhis.
